Car Wars Wednesdays: SEAT Leon vs. VW Golf

March 25, 2015

Buckle up, because it’s Wednesday and that means one thing – it’s time for another edition of Car Wars! This week, the hatchback competition is hotting up as the SEAT Leon takes on the VW Golf. It’s going to be a close one. Leon vs. Golf…who will be our winner? Let’s find out!

Design

The new SEAT Leon and the VW Golf are built on the same platform and use the same engines – so it’s little surprise that their design elements share more than one similarity. As always, it’s the Golf’s interior that really impresses. Soft-touch plastic materials and an eye-catching console add to the allure of the interior. But step inside the SEAT Leon and the Volkswagen stamp is evident there too. The slick, chrome-trimmed dashboard gives the SEAT a stylish feeling that is synonymous with VW. Points go to SEAT in this round.

Features

When it comes to equipment, these two rivals are pretty much neck and neck. Both cars come with features that other brands charge extra for, including a touch screen media system, Bluetooth and air-conditioning. Other SEAT Leon reviews praise the optional safety pack, and we think it gives it the edge over the Golf in this round.

Performance

All Golfs are turbocharged, and the range starts with either 84 bhp or 103 bhp 1.2 litre petrol engines. The 1.4-litre petrols deliver 121 bhp and 138 bhp, while the 1.6 diesel offers 103 bhp. The SEAT Leon boasts a variety of petrol and diesel engines. The petrol lineup starts with a 1.2 petrol engine, with 103 bhp – and at the top of the range is the SEAT Leon Cupra, with an staggering 276 bhp. The 1.6 litre engine offers the option of SEAT Ecomotive technology – and with 85.6 mpg and 87 g/km of CO2 emissions, you won’t have to worry about road tax – just like the e-Golf. With its array of engines, family car functionality and low running costs, this round goes to SEAT.

Price

It’s time to look at how much one of these hatchbacks will set you back. The SEAT Leon is a worthy contender against the VW Golf, coming in at £15,815 to the Golf’s respective £17,175. SEAT offer a cheaper version of what is essentially the same car. SEAT Leon vs. Golf…another point to SEAT.

The verdict: it was a race to the finish line, but the slightly thriftier SEAT Leon has won today’s battle.
