Germany Calls, Sweden Answers: Volvo V40 Review

October 15, 2014

In the past, the premium hatchback market has been completely dominated by German manufacturers, with cars such as the BMW 1 Series, the Mercedes A-Class, the Audi A3 and the Volkswagen Golf leading the way. However, there is now a new contender stepping up to the ring – the Volvo V40 is now taking the fight to the big German foursome. With our Volvo V40 review, we’re going to show you how this mighty hatchback is blowing its rivals out of the water.

  • Eco-conscious diesel engines

  • Eye-catching design

  • High quality cabins – without a high price tag

Design

The V40 has been brilliantly designed with unique looks that make it one of the most handsome cars in its class. Its design has clearly gathered inspiration from the rest of the Volvo range, with a V60-style bonnet, smooth front end, projector style headlights and its sleek glass hatch. The V40 is blessed with a low and sporty appearance, partly owed to its wide stance on the road – giving it the looks to make many of its German rivals green with envy!

With a huge range of trim levels available, there’s something for everyone. From the entry level SE range, sporting alloy wheels and a leather steering wheel as standard – to the sporty R-Design with its aggressive body styling and punchy engines. The V40 is also available with an impressive panoramic glass roof, connecting both front and rear passengers to the sky above – brightening up your daily commute!

Features

The base-model Volvo V40 comes well equipped with plenty of gadgets to keep you entertained and comfortable – with climate control, Bluetooth, and DAB radio as standard. However, a mid-level SE trim goes a step further with cruise control, automatic wipers, and plush interior trim to make your new V40 feel just that little bit more special. One particularly cool feature available on the V40 is a system that enables you to choose between three different ‘themes’ for the dials – a nifty addition if you’re willing to splash the cash.

Perhaps the V40’s most impressive feature is the fact that it is the safest car ever tested by Euro NCAP – and is packed full of cutting edge kit – giving you peace of mind behind the wheel. As well as the usual array of airbags and safety equipment, there are innovative features such as a low-speed collision avoidance system and external airbags which cover the windscreen if sensors detect a collision with a pedestrian. When it comes to safety, the competition doesn’t even come close to the Volvo.

Performance

When you buy a Volvo V40, you have the option of three diesel or four petrol engines. The 113bhp 1.6-litre D2 engine has plenty of power for every-day use, while maintaining impressive economy figures at 83.1mpg and 88g/km of CO2. It provides the perfect mix of power and efficiency for everyday driving. The D3 and D4 engines offer a little more pulling power – and do so without compromising overall efficiency. For petrol-heads the 255 bhp T5 engine, only available on the R-Line model, delivers more than enough power to rival any hot hatch, with a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds!

Prices for the Volvo V40 start at £18,995, while you’ll pay up to £31,900 for a range topping R-Line model. If you’d like to get your hands on a fantastic V40 of your own, then you’re in luck!
