World’s Most Bonkers Car Gets an Upgrade: Mansory G63 6×6

May 20, 2014

Last year saw the release of a 6 wheel drive version of Mercedes legendary G-wagon. The original Mercedes G-Class was developed as a military vehicle but went on sale to the public in 1979. Its design hasn’t changed much over the years, retaining its utilitarian looks and rugged off-road chassis – much like the Land Rover Defender. It wasn’t until AMG got their hands on the G-Class in 1997 that the car began to shift into the luxury performance 4×4 it is today.

Today the Mercedes G-Class is considered to be more of a big limousine than a 4×4, competing with the likes of the sumptuous Range Rover in the super luxury off-roader market. However, in 2013, Mercedes’ ‘in-haus’ performance specialists, AMG, decided that the G63 AMG just wasn’t big enough. They decided to stretch the original G-class chassis, creating a 6×6 monster. In order to shift all that extra weight, they swapped out the G-class engine in favour of an AMG tuned 5.5L V8, producing 536 bhp. An extra axle provides power to the extra set of 37-inch wheels, all controlled through five electronic diff-locks – making the G63 6×6 an invincible off-roader. The Mercedes created such a stir it was even featured on Top Gear.

Not one to miss a trick, aftermarket specialist Mercedes tuners Brabus took the G63 AMG 6×6 to the next level. Named the Brabus B63S-700, the car features larger, modified turbo-chargers, taking the engine’s total power to 700 bhp – that’s more than most supercars! The upgrades mean that the Brabus 6×6 is capable of the sprint from 0-62mph in just 7.4 seconds – not bad for a car that weighs in at nearly 4 tonnes!

As if that wasn’t enough, Brabus competitor, Mansory, have now decided to take the 6×6 even further. A reworked 6.6L V8 twin-turbo engine provides the oomph in the Mansory G63 AMG 6×6, with a new exhaust system and racing-spec components. This takes the total power output to 828 bhp – Mansory even had to electronically limit the torque levels to 737 lb/ft to keep the G63 in check. On top of that, Mansory are also offering full customisation to customers, meaning the interior and exterior of the car can be designed however you want it.

AMG have stated that only a limited number of G63 6x6s will be produced, so if you want to get your hands on one, you’d better be quick – and loaded. The standard G63 AMG 6×6 will set you back a staggering £370,000, with the Brabus and Mansory versions costing considerably more. It’s clear that the bonkers 6×6 is aimed at the mega-rich, but that doesn’t mean we can’t marvel at its engineering prowess. The AMG really is a triple threat, combining unrivalled off-road capabilities, unstoppable power and exquisite luxury.
