Ducati’s latest offering is the Monster 821, slotting mid-range into Ducati’s legendary Monster line-up. The new Monster 821 remains true to its naked bike roots, with plenty of exposed metal to satisfy riders after raw visual and engineering appeal.
Its 821cc V-twin engine puts out a monstrous 112 bhp, and is powerful enough to provide an exhilarating ride, but tame enough to remain practical and safe. The Monster 821 will reach a top speed of 140 mph and has a range of around 150 miles (averaging 40-45 mpg). The new Monster’s engine is an 11 degree Testastretta, lifted out of last years Hypermotard model, with a few cheeky extra additions.
Ducati have added an improved exhaust system, which the Italian manufacturers claim, gives the 821cc engine an additional 2 bhp boost. The new exhaust system keeps the bike within emissions limits, without spoiling the fun, meaning the 821 retains Ducati’s legendary distinctive growling exhaust notes. That’s not the only change, Ducati have also made some alterations to the Monster’s clutch, enabling smoother downshifts as you approach the bends.
The Monster 821 comes with Ducati’s intelligent ride mode settings. Allowing riders to select a mode depending on the type of road they’re riding on, whether that be busy city traffic or wide open road. The settings automatically alter the bikes power output, anti-lock brakes and traction control depending on which mode the rider selects. The city mode on the 821 reduces its maximum power output to just 75 bhp, making the bike easy to handle at low speeds. If you really want to open up the throttle, switch to touring or sport mode and hit the highway, and you’ll soon see the Monster live up to its name.
The Ducati Monster 821 is a fantastic all-rounder, the Monster range’s critically acclaimed design has won the praise of riders around the world and the 821 is no exception. It’s liquid cooled DOHC engine is lively and responsive and the Monster has a chassis to match. You can get your hands on the Monster 821 for just £8,995, making this sport-bike a no brainer if you’re after Ducati craftsmanship on a budget.
