Honda, A Brief History
Honda Motor Company is a Japanese company primarily known as a manufacturer of cars and motorcycles, founded by Soichiro Honda in 1948. Its headquarters are in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It is the second largest car manufacturer in Japan and in 2011 it was the eighth largest manufacturer in the world. In addition to that, it has also been the worlds’ largest motorcycle maker since 1959 and the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines measured by volume. 5% of company’s revenue is invested into research. Since 1968, Honda has also participated in robotics research and has created a humanoid robot ASIMO. It has also ventured into aerospace.
Honda designed the first motorbikes by attaching motors to bicycles in a post-war Japan, in an attempt to create a faster and a more fuel-efficient means of transport. In 1982, it was producing almost 3 million motorbikes a year.
Their most famous cars are Civic and Accord, which are still among the most popular used cars in the USA.
Honda has also been active in motorsports and in Formula 1, where it has been an entrant, constructor and engine supplier.
