Top 5 Tuesdays: Fuel Efficient Cars for 2015

December 30, 2014

It’s Tuesday, and that means it’s time for another instalment of Top 5 Tuesdays. In today’s top 5, we’re taking a look at the most fuel efficient cars available today. With environmentalism at an all-time high, getting the most miles to a gallon has become more important than ever. And if being green isn’t your priority, cars that return a ton of mpg (miles per gallon) also save a ton on your fuel bill. So let’s get down to it – these are the most efficient cars on the market today.

Peugeot 308 Blue Hdi

The clear winner in the race for most efficient cars is Peugeot. Their Peugeot 308 returns 91.1mpg, which puts it ahead of all the other cars on this list. That alone would be enough to make the top of this list, but it’s also an amazing car in its own right. This family hatchback is aimed toward practicality – with easy entry thanks to its wide doors and an impressive 470 litres of boot space. The most economical car around and practical to boot, the Peugeot 308 has earned its number one spot fair and square.

Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi

The number two spot in the most fuel efficient cars shortlist goes to Vauxhall’s supermini: the Vauxhall Corsa. The UK-made car has entered the supermini segment ready to compete. Not only is the Corsa one of the most efficient cars on the market (88.3mpg), but its entry price is also one of the lowest on this list. For as little as £8,995, you can drive away in this sporty, efficient supermini.

VW Golf BlueMotion

At number three, we’ve got contemporary classic, the VW Golf. The Golf made its fame by being practical, reliable, stylish and fun – and with the addition of BlueMotion technology, it can now add efficiency to its extensive list of assets. The BlueMotion version of the VW Golf returns 88.3mpg – same as the Vauxhall Corsa, but just with a slightly more demanding price tag. Still, the VW Golf has proven its worth in the past and still takes the bronze in the efficiency awards.

Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi

When the Kia Rio was first revealed in 2011, it set a new benchmark in fuel efficiency. Three years later, only three cars have managed to beat it – further underlining how far ahead the Rio was in the stakes for best mpg. With 88.3mpg on the 1.1 litre diesel, it gives back as many miles to the gallon as the Vauxhall Corsa and the VW Golf, but does so at the expense of several options – including air con and Bluetooth. Because of this, we had to drop the Kia Rio to the fourth spot on our most fuel efficient cars list.

Renault Clio 1.5 dCi

And last but not least, we have the Renault Clio. The car returns 88.3mpg, just like the rest of them – but only if you opt for the ECO pack, which adds another £250 to its £14,595 price tag. Despite this minor issue, the Renault Clio has more trim options, colour schemes and decals than any other supermini on the market today – which is why it earns our fifth place.

Fancy getting your hands on one of these beautiful fuel efficient cars, but need some help finding the funds? If you’re looking for the best mpg, cars like these sensational superminis are your best bet.
