Review: The 2014 BMW 1 Series

September 17, 2014

Legendary German brand BMW is celebrating nearly a century of success at the top of the luxury and sports car market. As the world’s biggest auto-maker of luxury cars, the German brand hasn’t disappointed with the new 1 Series hatchback. The sleek second-generation hatch is a real statement of BMW’s sporty heritage and today, we’re finding out why the latest 1 Series has set pulses racing across the globe.

  • BMW refinement, without the BMW price tag
  • Improved styling and a bigger cabin
  • Available from £17,775

Design

Available as either a 3-door or 5-door hatchback, the latest generation of the BMW 1 Series is a serious head turner. With its distinctive lines, striking xenon headlights and iconic kidney shaped front grill, the 1 Series epitomises pure sporting elegance. The big hatchback’s interior is not short of pizazz with plenty of leather and metal finishes on show – complemented by glossy black vent surrounds and knobs. Its sleeker styling and bigger cabin dimensions add a new dimension to the latest 1 Series, making previous models seem suddenly forgettable by comparison.

Features

Safety comes as standard with the rear-wheel drive 1 Series – thanks to a lane departure warning system, road sign recognition, adaptive headlights and automated emergency services dialler, helping you to feel completely safe behind the wheel. As expected, technology continues to the interior, the 1 Series features a 6.5 inch control display, BMW ConnectedDrive and the AUPEO! app for customised internet radio service, keeping you entertained whilst on the move.

Performance

This sporty hatch comes with a TwinPower turbo 1.4 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine as standard, helping it to hit 60 mph in 11.2 seconds and a top speed of 121 mph. At the top end of the scale is the mighty 3.0 litre turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine – generating a hefty 315 bhp thanks to its double-VANOS timing and precision injection systems. The top of the range M135i is capable of hitting 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, maxing out at an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The wide range of petrol and diesel engines offer something for everyone with the 1 Series – putting in a strong performance across the board.
