Mercedes B-Class Review: the First-Class Family Car

January 11, 2016

When it comes to class-leading family cars, you can’t go wrong with the Mercedes B-Class. Bringing a welcome taste of luxury to this competitive class, this premium alternative combines comfort with class, for an all-round impressive ride.

In our Mercedes B-Class review, we’ll be climbing inside this first-class family car to give you the full story – from its premium quality build to the range of efficient engines on offer. And once we’ve told you everything there is to know about this compact MPV, we’ll even lay out your Mercedes B-Class finance options to help you find a repayment plan that suits you.

Design

Drivers will really feel the benefit of the latest upgrades to the B-Class, as a larger grille and dramatic flank crease contribute to what we’d say is some particularly sexy styling. Offering a more sophisticated alternative to the traditional family car, it’s evident from the inside out that Mercedes is keen to make a powerful first impression.

A conventional monocoque platform replaces the older, more expensive sandwich structure – which means more interior space and a lower roof, creating a more athletic look overall. The cabin is generally roomy – with even more rear legroom than you’ll find inside the opulent S-Class. Bathed in soft-touch plastics, the interior of the Mercedes B-Class is a grade above what you’ll find in rival models and guaranteed to turn some heads.

Performance & Handling

A suite of four-cylinder engines comprise the standard Mercedes B-Class lineup – with buyers able to opt for a 1.6 litre petrol, 1.5 litre diesel, 1.8 litre diesel (offered in a choice of two output options) or a 2.2 litre diesel – which offers the urgency and flexibility you’d hope for from a big-ticket brand like Mercedes-Benz.

The 1.8 litre B200 CDI makes it from 0-62mph in a satisfying 9.4 seconds, offering more than adequate performance levels for a car in its class – on top of an impressive 52.3mpg in fuel economy. The superior 2.2 litre B220 CDI shaves a second off the B200’s sprint to 62mph, delivering significantly more torque over a wider spread of the rev range. Both the B200 and B220 cope equally well in and out of town – and the Mercedes B-Class delivers plenty of grip in tricky corners, on top of exceptional ride quality overall.

All diesel models in the B-Class lineup will cost you just £20 each year in road tax, thanks to their Band B status – and if you opt for the Electric Drive Mercedes B-Class, you’ll pay a negligible £2 for every 100 miles you drive (with the added bonus of paying no road tax whatsoever).

Features

Standard kit levels in the B-Class leave little to be desired, with alloy wheels, air-con, active park assist, automatic lights and a state-of-the-art media system – with 5.8 inch screen and USB port – all part of the entry-level package.

Step up to the Sport model and you’ll get rain-sensing windscreen wipers, as well as ambient interior lighting throughout. If you’re willing to splash the cash, the range-topping AMG Line comes kitted out with a more sporty interior and stylishly finished fabrics for added luxury.
