Built to rival such SUV giants as the Nissan Juke and the Renault Captur, the 2015 Fiat 500X is an Italian stallion with the looks, comfort and practicality to satisfy even the most demanding drivers. The 500X is a force to be reckoned with – and in this Fiat review, we’ll be taking a look at how this 1320 kg of metal plans to dominate the compact crossover market.
- The Fiat 500X offers the reputation of the 500 with some 4×4 attitude on top
- Sexy and sophisticated, the interior is one very classy affair
- Capable on or off-road, the 500X shares a platform with the formidable Jeep Renegade
Features
The rugged styling of the Fiat 500X is enough to imply its off-road capabilities – offering superior quality mouldings and a commanding view of the road. The front-wheel-drive versions of the 500X look set to be the most popular options – but an all-wheel-drive system is available on demand, badged as the Fiat 500X Cross Plus.
For those less inclined towards off-road, there are Pop, Popstar and Lounge trims on offer – and a tasty engine range available upon the car’s 2015 launch. Front-drive petrols include a 138bhp 1.4L Turbo MultiAir2 and a 109bhp 1.6L E-torQ, while diesel lovers can enjoy a 118bhp 1.6L MultiJet II as well as a 138bhp 2.0L MultiJet II (complete with a 9-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive).
Later, we’ll see another pair of four-wheel-drive 9-speed auto petrols join the Fiat 500X line-up – a 168bhp 1.4L Turbo MultiAir 2 and a 184bhp 2.4L MultiAir2.
Interior
Inside the Fiat 500X, you’ll find an interior that demands to be noticed. With some seriously sophisticated decor, the interior is high quality, spacious and dripping with elegant touches. Sitting in the 500X is an empowering and luxurious experience, atop stylish seats surrounded by a host of high-grade equipment and opulent upholstery.
There are features aplenty in the Fiat 500X – including the full safety toolkit, complete with blind spot assist, lane departure warnings and a nifty parking camera. Connectivity comes in the form of Fiat’s UConnect infotainment system, compatible with smartphones – and voice-controlled TomTom navigation.
Performance
The 500X offers a mighty fine ride and tackles nasty bends with ease – providing ample grip and fighting understeer and body roll remarkably well for a car of its kind. The 118bhp 1.6L diesel – set to be the UK favourite – takes the Fiat 500X from 0-62 in 10.5 seconds, with a combined fuel economy of 69.9mpg and delightfully low CO2 emissions of 109g/km. Altogether, a comfortable and capable machine set to take the UK’s roads by storm when it arrives in 2015 – with prices starting from around £16k.
