Škoda, A Brief History
Škoda is an automobile manufacturer based in Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Today it is owned by the Volkswagen and is the fourth brand in the Volkswagen group, alongside Volkswagen, Seat and Audi. Their logo, a green winged arrow, represents the company’s care for the environment, the use of eco materials, precision, vision, innovation and speed.
The company is one of the oldest companies that has an unbroken history of producing cars. It was founded in 1890 as a bicycle manufacturer. They produced their first motorbike in 1899 and their first car in 1905. The company carried the brand L & K until 1926 when it merged with an arms manufacturer Škoda Works and adopted their name.
In the years that followed, Škoda enjoyed a monopoly in the domestic market and produced numerous models popular in Eastern Europe. It was also one of the few Eastern European car manufacturers exporting their vehicles to the west. In the 1960’s the standard of their cars became questionable due to the new technology in the western world which made their cars seem ancient-looking and poorly built in comparison. The production stagnated until 1987 when the model range Favorit went into production.
Škoda was sold to Volkswagen in 1991 and has since turned into a credible brand again as the cars are produced to Volkswagen’s high quality standards. In 2009, Top Gear Magazine named Škoda Superb Luxury Car of the Year and Škoda Yeti Family Car of the Year. Driver Power survey, a poll of 46,000 car owners carried out Auto Express Magazine, found them to be the best car of any to own in the UK – in first place is the Škoda Yeti, while in second place is the Škoda Superb and in sixth the Octavia.
