Mazda, A Brief History

Mazda Motor Company is a Japanese automotive manufacturer based in Fuchu, Hiroshima, in Japan. It was founded in 1920 as a cork factory and a machine-tool manufacturing plant, but soon turned to making vehicles. Today it is the fifteenth biggest automaker by production worldwide.

The company’s name derives from Ahura Mazda, “the god of wisdom, intelligence, and harmony” in early Asian cultures. The company formally adopted the Mazda name in 1984. Its logo, which has changed 7 times since 1936, is a stylized, winged “M” meant to show Mazda stretching its wings for the future.

Since the 1960s Mazda continued to develop and use Wankel rotary engine which made it the only car manufacturer to feature three different engines: gasoline piston, diesel and rotary. In 1989 the company produced  MX-5 Miata, a two-door sports car which was named the best-selling two-seat convertible in history by the 2000 “Guinness Book of World Records”.

From 1979 to 2010 Mazda used to be part of the Ford group. Even though Ford divested its stake in Mazda, the two companies remain strategic partners.

Mazda sponsors several professional sports teams and its vehicles and engines compete in a variety of disciplines around the world. More Mazdas are raced every week than any other car brand and it is the only Japanese automaker to score an overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
