KIA, A Brief History
Kia Motors is South Korea’s oldest and second largest manufacturer of cars and trucks, founded in 1944 as a steel tubing and bicycle parts producer. It has produced and exported Korea’s first cars as well as Korea’s first bicycle, scooter and a truck.
Kia formed a partnership with Ford in 1986 and produced several Mazda derived vehicles such as Pride (based on the Mazda 121) and Avella, which were sold in North America, Australia and Asia as the Ford Festiva and Ford Aspire. Today it is a part of Hyundai-Kia automotive group and produces over 1.5 million vehicles a year (including cars, commercial vehicles and buses). It has a network of dealers and distributors in 172 countries and employs 44,000 people. In 1992 it was also incorporated in the USA.
Kia Motors has also specialised in the production of military vehicles and is a sole maker of military vehicles designated by the South Korean government.
Company’s headquarters are in Seoul, South Korea, and its slogan is “The Power to Surprise”. The name KIA derives from Korean words meaning “rising out of Asia” and their cars are recognisable by a corporate grille known as the Tiger Nose.
Many KIA models have won design awards as well as “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The company is today one of the fastest rising and most fearsome rivals to Western car makers.
