Jaguar, A Brief History
Jaguar is a British car manufacturer and one of the most famous sports car makers in the world. It is owned by Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC, a subsidiary of Indian Tata Motors. Its cars are designed at a site in Warwickshire and company’s headquarters in Coventry and manufactured in a plant near Birmingham.
The company was founded in 1922 under the name Swallow Sidecar and it originally produced motorcycle sidecars. Their first car was produced 10 years later. Until the end of WWII their cars bore the SS (Swallow Sidecar) initials, but the company then changed its name to Jaguar Cars because of the undesirable ‘SS’ connotations.
Jaguar became famous for its eye catching sports cars: XK 120 built in 1949 was the fastest production car of its day and it soon became the company’s first export model and an automotive icon. In 1951 they produced C type, a racing version of the XK 120 road car, which won the classic Le Mans race twice. But their best known vehicle was produced in 1969 – Jaguar E type, the most famous sports car of all time, described by some as the most beautiful car in the world. It was more technologically improved than its predecessors and became a champ racing car. The company has had major success in sports car racing, particularly in the Le Mans 24 Hours – throughout the years, Jaguar won Le Mans 7 times.
In 1999 Jaguar became part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group and in March 2008 it was sold to Indian auto manufacturers Tata Motors. The company continues to build X-type cars, both sedans and coupes, with a sporting heritage and, in their own words, “a new focus on luxurious performance cars that outclass the competition”.
