FIAT, A Brief History

FIAT is one of the oldest car manufacturers, founded in 1899. Today it is the largest automotive company in Italy, one of the 6 biggest car manufacturers in Europe and in 2012 it was 11th largest car manufacturer in the world. Its cars are built all around the world; the largest number produced outside Italy are built in Brazil, where FIAT is a market-leader with a share of 22,5%. Its name stands for “Fabrica Italiana Automobili Torino”, i.e. Italian automotive factory of Turin, which is where its headquarters are.

FIAT specializes in small cars such as Panda, Uno and Punto. FIAT 500, known in Italy as the cinquecento, has become one of the most iconic Italian cars. However, FIAT today controls almost all Italian car brands such as Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Maserati and produces sports cars, trucks, vans, buses and agricultural vehicles as well. In 2009 FIAT group also took control over Chrysler, which allowed it to enter the US market.

FIAT group has won The European Car of the Year award 12 times, more than any other car manufacturer. The last car that won the award was FIAT 500 in 2008.
