BMW, A Brief History

BMW was established in 1917 when it was manufacturing aircraft engines. Follow the ‘Versailles Armistice Treaty’, the company shifted to motorcycle manufacture in 1923 and then moved into automobile production in 1928-29.

BMW’s first effort was the Dixi, a vehicle based on the Austin 7 and was licensed by the Austin Motor Company.

The iconic bmw-m3-badgeFollowing several years of financial instability, BMW acquired the Hans Glas company based in Dingolfing, Germany, in 1966. It was reputed that the acquisition was mainly to gain access to Glas’ development of the timing belt with an overhead camshaft in automotive applications. Glas vehicles were briefly badged as BMW until the company was fully absorbed.

In 1994, BMW bought the Rover group, which at the time consisted of Rover, Land Rover and MG. It also included the defunct Austin and Morris brands, one of which greatly boosted their profits in 2001.

The ‘new shape’ Mini was born which achieved sales figures of over 200,000 each year since 2005.

The brand of BMW goes from strength to strength and today is one of the prestige badges in the car industry, producing vehicles renowned for their reliability and quality of build.
