VW Golf fans worldwide are no doubt drooling at their computer screens right now. To celebrate the 40th VW Golf anniversary, VW have debuted the new R 400 at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show, and you guessed it – R 400 means 400 bhp – those crazy Germans! Although currently just a concept, VW have hinted that the R 400 will make it to production at a later stage.

Using the latest Golf R as a starting block, VW have added some serious upgrades to the already sporty R model. The larger, offset 19 inch low profile wheels sit in flared wheel arches, making the R 400 wider by 4 cm. Other changes include performance suspension, exaggerated air intakes and a redesigned bumper. Topped off with neon yellow accents, the revised body shape gives the Golf R 400 an aggressive, thoroughbred appearance.

It’s not just about looks

The Golf R 400 is a serious feat of engineering – VW are famous for their precision, quality and market-leading innovation. The R 400 is no exception, as VW have tuned the 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine from the standard Golf R to the max. The R 400 achieves 395 bhp and 332 lb / ft of torque, giving the Golf R 400 a power to weight ratio to rival that of a supercar. The special edition Golf can achieve a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 174 mph – we’re not sure how comfortable we would feel at this speed in a family hatchback!

This insane amount of power is directed through VW’s patented 4motion all-wheel-drive system. To keep things from getting out of control, VW have introduced their XDS+ technology, which independently brakes individual wheels to improve cornering abilities. The Golf R 400 will be available with a 6-speed, dual clutch gearbox, transferring power to all four wheels.

When can I get mine?

VW stated in a press release that the new Golf R 400 is inspired by the legendary Golf Rallye G60 and the 2002 Golf R32. This extreme version of the world’s most loved hatchback is sure to whet the appetite of driving enthusiasts worldwide. VW have yet to confirm a release date, but judging by the stir caused at the Beijing Motor Show, we reckon VW will be setting their sights on a production version very soon.
