The latest generation of the VW Beetle has come a long way since it was first manufactured in 1938. Design
Despite its recent makeover, the VW Beetle is still instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive styling. While it’s retained much of its famous design, a flatter bonnet, sharper roofline and minimalistic approach make the Beetle look and feel sportier than ever before – particularly if you opt for the Sport or Turbo trims.
Available in a 3-door body style or classic VW Beetle convertible, the VW Beetle still manages to offer a decent amount of boot space – with 310 litres of luggage capacity. Climb into the cabin and you’ll find a blend of retro-styling and contemporary design which helps to create an upmarket interior – and with deep door bins, two gloveboxes and a central console cup holder, there’s plenty of space for your in-car essentials.
Features
As far as trim levels go, you’ve got five to choose from. As you’d expect from Volkswagen, even the entry level Beetle comes with air conditioning, DAB digital radio, a colour Infotainment system, Electronic Stability Control and remote central locking. If you decide to opt for the Design trim, you’ll get a colour coordinated exterior and interior, leather-trim steering wheels, a Composition Media Infotainment system, Bluetooth, front fog lights and 17 inch alloy wheels.
Step up to the Sport trim and you’ll get 18 inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, front sport seats and front and rear parking sensors. If you fancy splashing the cash, the range-topping Turbo Black and Silver will give you twin exhausts and either a black effect or chrome effect detailing for a touch of luxury.
Performance
As the VW Beetle is based on the Mk6 VW Golf, it doesn’t disappoint in terms of drivability. It gives you plenty of grip on the road, good body control and well-weighted steering – and the engine lineup offers drivers plenty of choice. For petrol-heads looking for reasonable running costs but a decent amount of power, we’d recommend either the 104bhp 1.2 litre Bluemotion or 148bhp 1.4 litre Bluemotion – which return 51.4mpg and 48.7mpg respectively. The top of the range 2.0 litre petrol might only return 42.2mpg while emitting 150g/km of CO2, but it’s the top performer in terms of speed and power.
If you’re on the hunt for the best fuel economy, the 2.0 litre diesel with Bluemotion Technology gives drivers plenty of power while returning an impressive 65.7mpg – and CO2 emissions of just 112g/km make annual road tax a very reasonable £30.
