The Car Loan Warehouse|Top 5 Tuesdays: The Off-Road Roundup

If you fancy yourself as a rugged adventurer or need a car with lots of space, a 4×4 is the car for you.Whatever the weather or ground conditions – from breezing through icy conditions to comfortably tackling muddy terrain – you can’t lose with a 4×4. Ranging from luxury to utilitarian, 4x4s are taking the UK’s roads by storm – and we’ve taken our pick of the best 4x4s on the market.

  • Land Rover Discovery 4×4: amazing on/off-road ability!
  • BMW X3 4×4: hits the mark with agility and luxury
  • Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4: agile suspension to soak up those big bumps!
  • Audi Q3 Crossover: fiercely competitive at only £23,875
  • Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4×4: fantastic performance figures

Land Rover Discovery 4×4

The Land Rover Discovery 4×4 gives you the best of both worlds – it’s fantastic on road and performs beautifully on tougher terrains too. The Discovery offers space for up to 7 adults, which makes it an ideal choice for family-orientated 4×4 lovers. Air-conditioning, electric models and keyless entry come as standard – but if you upgrade to the XS Trim, you’ll get cruise control, powered sliding doors and cosy heated leather seats thrown in! The smooth SDV6 3.0 litre engine is the star of the show, offering great performance and fuel economy, considering the car’s weight and size. The entry level Discovery surges from 0-60 mph in 8.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 112 mph, with fuel economy figures of 213 g/km. Starting from £40,005, there’s no doubt the Discovery is pricey – but what more could you want for your money than the full package?

BMW X3 4×4

The BMW X3 4×4 has been voted one of the best cars in its class – and this stylish car more than hits the mark when it comes to agility and luxury. The X3 is practical and bursting with cheeky luxuries, including leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and cruise control. You can choose between the 2 or 3 litre diesel engines which pack quite a punch, ranging from 141 bhp to 309 bhp for the 6-cylinder 3 litre engine. We’d recommend the forceful entry-level 2.0 litre engine that hits 60 mph in just 9.5 seconds and reaches an impressive top speed of 121 mph. Fuel economy figures are excellent for a 4×4, with 131 g/km of CO2 emissions. Starting from £30,995, it’s probably one of the best 4x4s you can buy today.

Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4

The Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4 is a seriously kitted-out SUV, beautiful and practical with a ton of safety features. Available as a 5 or 7 seater, the Santa Fe has a grade-A interior with agile suspension and tyres that help the car to absorb big bumps – fantastic for hilly terrain! All Santa Fe 4×4 models feature a 2.2 litre diesel engine that bounds from 0-60 mph in 9.8 seconds. Reaching a top speed of 118 mph with 159 g/km CO2 emissions,  it’s a strong engine that isn’t too greedy with the fuel. Starting from a competitive £27,800, the Santa Fe comes in a little cheaper than other top 4x4s on the market.

Audi Q3 Crossover

The compact Audi Q3 Crossover joined its predecessors, the Q5 and Q7, in 2011. Part of its attraction lies in that it looks like a 4×4, but without the drawbacks of its bigger counterparts – meaning you get a smooth ride and can easily slide into tight parking spots. The Q3 rides like a dream with plenty of grip and cornering – and entry-level models come with a 1.4 litre TFSI diesel engine that provides plenty of power, hitting a top speed of 126 mph and jumping from 0-60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Starting from a fiercely competitive £23,875, the Q3 Crossover offers exceptional value for money.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4×4

In line with its long-standing rep as a luxury automaker, Mercedes has very much met expectations with the M-Class 4×4. The M-Class is a giant of the 4×4 market, with its spacious interior and sharply creased bodywork. Cruise and climate control with power steering come as standard, while performance figures are strapping with a top speed of 130 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in just 9 seconds. These lovely numbers are owed to its understated 2.1 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine. If you’ve got deep pockets, you can also opt for the 3.0 litre 6-cylinder engine – or even the mighty 5.5 litre turbocharged V8 petrol engine! The M-Class 4×4 can be yours starting from £44,450 – but it’s a bargain considering its performance figures and equipment!
