Top 5 Tuesdays: The Best Selling Cars in Britain

February 17, 2015

Top 5 Tuesdays is reserved for the crème de la crème – and this week is one to top them all, as we look at the top 5 best-selling cars in Britain.

The Brits have always loved their cars, from the unreliable classics to the trustworthy favourites. But, amazingly enough, when it comes to the masses, it appears we stick to what we know. This shortlist actually only features three different manufacturers and shows that some cars are built to stand the test of time.

If you need to get your hands on one of these best sellers, take a look and see if our car loans could help you get the one you want.

Ford Fiesta

Top of the list is the Ford Fiesta, having sold an incredible 4,132,294 units up until June 2014 – making this not only the best-selling car in the UK, but of all time! The Fiesta has come a long way since its birth in 1976, but it consistently provides a comfortable drive, great handling and value for money with starting prices at £10,145. This contemporary classic has plenty of style and additional features to choose from too.

 Vauxhall Astra

In second place is the Vauxhall Astra – and it doesn’t even come close to the Ford Fiesta, with number of units sold at 2,589,351. However, it isn’t hard to see why this is the second favourite choice. The Astra is a practical yet stylish hatchback that boasts a ton of mod-cons, ample space and great handling too. With a variety of different engines to choose from, there’s plenty of power up for grabs at a starting price of £15,495.

 Vauxhall Corsa

Our third place goes to the Vauxhall Corsa, which has sold 1,829,581 units. If you want a nippy car that handles well and is fuel efficient too, the Corsa is the one for you. Like the Astra, there are plenty of engine sizes to choose from – but we recommend the 1.0 three-cylinder or 1.4 turbo for a little extra oomph! Corsas are reasonably priced too, starting from £8,995.

 Volkswagen Golf

This German classic comes in a close fourth place, with unit sales of 1,813,373. The Golf has always been an incredibly reliable car, with exceptional design, space and solidity for great handling and refinement. They’re more expensive to own than some of their hatchback competitors, but hold their value well. So with prices starting at £17,175, you should look at this as a long-term investment.

 Ford Focus

And finally in fifth place is the Ford Escort’s successor, the Ford Focus – with 1,769,687 units sold. The latest Ford Focus offers superb handling and plenty of power, as well as low CO2 emissions. With a modern and sleek design, the Focus offers a very comfortable ride overall – and prices start at a satisfying £13,995.
