The UK Car Industry is Booming and We’re Feeling Very British

January 24, 2014

Britain leads the motorway thanks to Nissan, Land Rover and Jaguar. With new cars being made every 20 seconds in the UK, we are well and truly booming. Strong sales and healthy exports have led to new investments – and there are many new and exciting products on the horizon.

Car sales have reached an all-time high since 2007, with city cars and superminis being the most popular. Both cheap to run and cheap to buy, these cars tend to be a smart choice when renewing your car. And speaking of small cars, the third generation MINI is on its way. Nearly 1.9 million MINI hatchbacks have been built since 2001 – and the brand has gone from strength to strength, accounting for 14% of all cars built in the UK. Honda has tweaked the Civic to keep up with the Ford Golf, creating a great alternative in the city car section. Its small engine and low car emissions have helped it become a viable option for environmentally drivers.

To keep the growth of the UK’s motor industry consistent, the University of Warwick is expanding its campus to accommodate a new 3100 million national automobile innovation campus (NAIC), where around 1,000 academics, researchers, technologists and engineers will work – they plan to open in 2016. This centre will be the driving force behind expanding our motor industry, while ensuring the key skills stay in the UK.

The UK government announced wishes to be the world leader in autonomous cars. Plans to review and implement a framework that will ensure our success in this is being drawn up. Already a £10 million fund has been put aside for the chosen town to become a testing ground for the automatous vehicles.

On the lower emissions front, Boris Johnson, mayor of London, met with five manufactures currently working on creating cars with reduced emissions to coincide with the new reforms being made in parliament. In 2020, London will be using zero emission taxis helping it reach the goal of being an ultra-low emission zone. Already paving the way in lower emissions and alternative fuels is the Nissan Leaf, with over 3,000 being sold in the UK. After an investment of £420 million, the Nissan Leaf is now built in Sunderland alongside the Nissan Qashqai.

With the current projections indicating that the British motor industry will continue to rise, we look forward to seeing new and innovative products, with health competition fuelling better and more eco-friendly cars to be used by all. So whether you’re looking for an electric city car or a comfortably reliable hybrid, this is the year to buy it. Is funding looking like a problem?
