BMW’s latest model, the X4, was briefly unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. The X4 is expected to make its official debut at the New York Motor Show in April this year. The all-wheel-drive X4 is based on its little sister, the X3. The new model is elongated and rides lower to the ground with a dramatic new coupe body shape.
Refinement levels are higher than the baby BMW X3 with more equipment as standard. The X4 includes heated seats, 18-inch alloy wheels, an automatic opening tailgate, xenon headlights and parking sensors as standard. Inside, the dashboard and interior have been tastefully accented with black gloss panels and aluminium trim. It’s clear that the X4 is designed to appeal to the executive buyer.
BMW will only be releasing diesel engined variants of the X4 for the UK market, although this could change in future with potential for a sporty M power engine variant. The basic xDrive 20d model is powered by a 2.0L engine producing 187 bhp. Economy figures for the entry level model are respectable for such a large car, at 54 mpg. All models come with start-stop technology and energy regenerating brakes as standard, further adding to fuel economy performance.
Don’t be fooled into thinking the diesel only engine options mean that performance won’t be a feature of the X4. The xDrive 35d model employs a six-cylinder 3.0L engine, producing 308 bhp. This will take the range topping model from 0-62 in a staggering 5.2 seconds and to a top speed of 153 mph.
All of the BMW X4 models feature BMW’s intelligent xDrive four wheel drive system, ensuring that power is distributed to where it’s needed. Combined with variable sport steering, the X4 is sure to deliver a sharp and dynamic driver experience.
Prices start at £36,500 for the xDrive 20d model. The range topping xDrive 35d comes in just shy of £49,000. The BMW X4 will be available in dealerships from the 12th July this year.
