Spy Shots of Next Gen Audi R8 Leaked

March 21, 2014

The hugely popular Audi R8 has gone from strength to strength since its original launch in 2007, having received numerous facelifts along the way. Now it’s time for a brand new R8 – which Audi have confirmed will go on sale in 2015. Audi are no doubt feeling the pressure for the replacement model to live up to the success of the previous R8.

Spy shots of the new R8 being tested on the infamous Nurburgring in Germany reveal subtle changes to the design. Redesigned head and tail lights bring the R8 up to date with other new Audi models. The new R8 also looks to be sporting a more aggressive front grille, bumpers and body panelling. The leaked photos also reveal that the next R8 will feature a downforce generating rear diffuser and redesigned rectangular exhausts.

Chief developer for Audi revealed that the next generation R8 will only be available with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox, something manual fans may kick up a fuss over. Audi also confirmed that the new R8 will continue to be offered with the same engine and V8 or V10 engine variants. On top of this, the developer revealed that turbo-charged engines will also be added to the line in certain markets. The 2015 R8 also feature a hybrid carbon fibre-aluminium chassis shared with the new Lamborghini Huracan, making it considerably lighter – something which is sure to improve handling.

Further details of the next generation R8 are being kept firmly under wraps – however, the new Audi TT is a likely indicator of what we can expect. The interior of the new TT is rumored to be replicated in next year’s R8 and features a high definition TFT screen, replacing dashboard dials. The screen displays all the usual dials and engine readings but can be switched to display sat-nav. The slightly larger chassis of the new model is likely to increase interior space – this combined with de-cluttering the dash in favour of digital displays will mean the new R8 could feel considerably roomier inside.

Although official prices have not been released, the V8 version of the new Audi R8 is estimated to be around the £100,000 mark. In the current Audi R8 range, the V8 model is priced at £94,000, the V10 FSI 525 comes in at £115,000 and the top of the range coupe V10 FSI 550 Plus will set you back £127,000.
