Review: The 2014 Audi S6 Avant

November 7, 2014

Brilliant German engineering combined with attractive aesthetics provide the winning formula for Audi’s overwhelming popularity in recent years – and the latest S6 Avant is no exception. Born from the Audi A6 family of mid-size executive saloons, the Avant offers a spacious estate option – while the S-line badging brings some serious performance to the table.

The Audi S6 Avant is our kind of car; a real ‘street sleeper’ – coming in at a rather hefty 1960kg, you’d never suspect this estate is packing such a serious punch, thanks to its 414bhp V8. While performance figures may not be at the top of your list – you wouldn’t be considering this type of car if you wanted an asthmatic, wheezy little shopping car (although given the size of the load area, the A6 is as practical as it is sporty). Audi have stuck the perfect balance of understated power and refinement in a family sized package, meaning drivers can truly experience the best of both worlds when it comes to performance and practicality.

Features

As expected from a premium executive estate, the Audi S6 Avant is packed full of technology. Innovative features such as its active noise cancellation system work to improve refinement, by broadcasting ‘antiphase resonance’ over the car’s speakers – keeping road and engine noise to a minimum. A HUD (Heads Up Display) system is a new addition to the latest models – a visual system normally reserved for fighter jets! All of this technology comes wrapped up in luxurious leather seats and trim, offering a luxurious and cocooning environment to the driver.

Performance

Twin turbo chargers fitted to a 4.0 litre V8 petrol engine is always going to be a recipe for fun, but usually at the cost of heavy fuel consumption. However, Audi’s Cylinder On Demand technology means that although the S6 Avant has a power output to rival super cars – pumping out a whopping 405 ft/lb of torque, on light throttle loads at urban speeds, the monster V8 can return an impressive 30.1 MPG!

Couple that sort of performance with a seven speed dual clutch S-Tronic auto gearbox and Audis famous Quattro four-wheel-drive system and you’ve got something pretty special (and rather lively!).

Design

To the untrained eye, the Audi S6 Avant looks pretty conservative – only hinting at what lies beneath with its fat tyres and sporty exhaust system. As with the rest of the Audi range, the S6 Avant has received an update – bringing it firmly inline with the modern Audi silhouette.

The high-performance S6 Avant model will set you back £56,000, however, you can get your hands on the capable and well equipped A6 Avant base model from as little as £34,000. Despite being a premium product, the S6 Avant is a relative bargain considering it’s performance and refinement levels – offering fantastic value.
