Review: The New Citroen Grand C4 Picasso

August 21, 2014

Citroen’s recently refreshed lineup offers up some truly head-turning design – with their latest release, the C4 Cactus, conjuring up Marmite-esque love-it-or-hate-it reactions. The French automaker is famous for its quirky design, and the new Grand C4 Picasso is no exception – who said MPVs had to be boring?

  • The Grand C4 Picasso is a stylish, spacious and well-equipped 7-seater MPV
  • Available with a wide range of super efficient engines
  • Starting from just £19,205

With the standard 5 seat C4 Picasso being awarded What Car’s best MPV of 2014 – it’s no wonder the larger Grand C4 is set to be a winner.

As with all Citroens, design comes in high on the priority list. The Grand C4 Picasso mirrors its smaller sibling (the standard C4), using the same basic front end design. Its distinctive LED daytime running lights and chrome detailing – spilling out of the Citroen logo and running the full width of the car – give it a futuristic sci-fi character. Admittedly, as the eye moves further back, the rest of the Grand C4 does start to resemble a typical MPV – however, Citroen have kept the lines clean, ensuring a design that won’t date.

The Grand C4 Picasso is a true 7-seater, with plenty of space for taller adults in both the front and second row of seats. The 2 extra back seats aren’t half bad either, offering more space and easier access than rival 7-seaters. It’s clear Citroen have made a conscious effort to keep the Grand C4 practical – with all of the seats being adjustable and movable. The rear seats can also be fully collapsed, revealing a colossal boot – big enough to take on any luggage challenge.

The already spacious feel of the interior is further amplified by the Grand C4’s massive wraparound windows. This not only gives the car a light and airy feel, making it look like a conservatory on wheels from the inside, but makes for excellent all round visibility – an important aspect when maneuvering a car of this size.

Technology is another area where Citroen continue to excel, with the entry level Grand C4 coming with generous equipment levels as standard. Basic models all come with air-conditioning, alloy wheels, USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher-end models come with innovative features like a reverse parking camera and a large touch-screen entertainment display on the dashboard. Available with 4 trim levels and 7 different engine and transmission combinations, there’s something for everyone with the Grand C4.

As with most of the new generation Citroen lineup, economy figures are excellent across the board – with the capable 1.6 litre e-HDi diesel achieving a phenomenal 70 mpg. This diesel is our pick of the range, putting out 113 bhp – more than enough for the Grand C4 to keep up on both city roads and motorways.
