Preview: The New Audi A8 Due 2016

August 14, 2014

Audi is a pioneering force within the automotive world, and the latest car added to the illustrious Audi lineup is the new Audi A8, due for release in 2016.  Designed to rival the Mercedes S-class and BMW 7 Series in presence and ability, this luxury saloon is expected to debut at the 2015 Frankfurt show. Audi recently teased its fanbase by exclusively releasing details of the car – and today, we’re giving you the low-down on this brand new Audi A8.

  • An all-European car – a blend of British, Italian and German assets
  • Set to feature the ground-breaking Traffic Jam Assist – it’ll drive itself in traffic!
  • Engine upgrade – a spirited new 3.0 litre V6 engine!

Design:

Those involved in the car’s early design stages claim that the new A8 merges British elegance, Italian sportiness and German solidity – a triple threat by any standards. The opulent saloon will allegedly boast an impressive and futuristic aesthetic – looking more like a coupe, with a smaller single-frame grille and a nicely tapered rear end. The new Audi is reputedly lighter than its predecessor, and the stylish exterior should make use of aluminium and carbon fibre for enhanced aerodynamics on the road.

Features:

The 2016 A8 will break new ground in more ways than one – driving dynamics are expected to improve with fresh torque vectoring, re-engineered air suspension and a next-generation Drive Select. There’ve been talks about the new A8 featuring a Traffic Jam Assistant which hasn’t yet been launched – this technology will revolutionise driving as it enables the car to pilot itself in traffic jam situations! It remains to be seen whether this bold feature will come as standard or at an extra price, though. Audi’s also about to launch its limited production model R8 LMX with cutting-edge laser headlights – and by the time 2016 rolls around, we suspect the A8 will benefit from this same innovative laser high-beam system as an option.

Performance:

The new Audi is set to feature a new robust 3.0 litre V6 engine that pushes out 326 bhp – an upgrade from the current V8 4-cylinder engine with cylinder shut-down technology. Buyers can also opt to have the dynamic and popular V8 or V10 diesel engines, producing a mighty 408 and 500 bhp respectively. Audi talks are underway about a version with a new plug-in hybrid engine, with rumours of a pure electric e-tron version surfacing too. This luxurious saloon is expected to jump from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds flat and reach a conservative top speed of 125 mph. The new A8 lineup will also feature a low friction lightweight quattro all-wheel drive and an 8 speed automatic gearbox as standard.
