Review: the 2014 Ford Mondeo

October 23, 2014

The hotly anticipated, brand new Ford Mondeo is set to hit showrooms at the end of the year – and it brings with it some sophisticated design and timeless style. Distinctly Ford but with several welcome additions, the 2014 Ford Mondeo is very much the car we know and love – just a little bit better than ever before.

Design

With its exceptionally sleek design, the new Ford Mondeo, known in North America as the Ford Fusion, features an arching roofline and an aesthetic to rival the sophisticated new Fiesta and Focus models. The shell of the new Mondeo is made with hydro-formed high strength steel and there’s a noticeable integral link design in the control blade suspension. The interior of the 2014 Ford Mondeo is a very tidy setup compared with previous incarnates of this car, setting this new instalment apart from its market competitors.

Choice is the name of the game with the new Mondeo, with a range of equally excellent body styles to choose from. The five-door hatchback and estate are the most popular, with the saloon style also a firm favourite. The 2014 Mondeo is a perfect marriage of present and past, with the front of the vehicle emanating Ford’s new aesthetic, while the rear offers the nostalgia of a classic Ford.

Features

Features of the new Ford Mondeo are what really justify the price tag, especially for die-hard Ford fans. Fitting five, the Mondeo boasts a 550 litre boot – which is roomier still with the seats down.

You’ll also find a physical button set-up replacing the touch-sensitive climate control panel, with adaptive dampers available as an option in Europe only.

With safety features well and truly accounted for, the 2014 Ford Mondeo boasts pedestrian detection, emergency braking and rear seatbelt airbags for an extra £175. With a stiffer body structure than ever before, the new Mondeo is no doubt set for the illustrious five-star safety rating.

Performance

While the new Mondeo will offer an enormous engine range further down the line, the current picks of the bunch are the 178bhp 2L turbodiesel, the 1.5L petrol EcoBoost and the deliciously economical petrol-electric Hybrid. The EcoBoost whispers and purrs and is our pick of the lot, revving like an absolute dream.

The 2014 Ford Mondeo is an improvement on an already much-loved member of the prestigious Ford family. Offering a triple threat of design, features and economy, this is one mainstay of the motoring market we don’t expect to disappear anytime soon.

The 2014 Ford Mondeo starts from £22,045 for the estate version, or from £20,795 for the hatchback – but if you don’t have the budget to get behind the wheel of the new Mondeo, we can help.
