New 0-62mph World Record for Electric Vehicle

October 2, 2013

What’s the fastest accelerating car in the world? It’s a bit of an open question and is actually a wide and varied subject.

A group of Dutch university students have just broken the world record for the fastest accelerating electric vehicle, with their single-seater, the DUT12.

All from the Delft University of Technology, the students created a 135hp 4 wheel-drive beast which boasts a ludicrous power-to-weight ratio of 931hp per tonne. Combine that with no gear shifts and masses of torque and you have the recipe to propel a person from 0-62mph in no time at all.

The previous record for an electric vehicle stood at 2.68 seconds but on their timed run the students achieved an eye watering 2.15 second sprint. It looks impressive on video and must be amazing as a passenger, but how does this compare with other 0-60mph times?

Bugatti Veyron – 2.4 seconds

Ariel Atom V8 – 2.3 seconds

Top Fuel Dragster – 0-100mph in 0.7 seconds.

YES that’s 0-100mph in zero point seven seconds!
