Motorbike Mondays

Ducati is iconic in the motorbike world and has been for over 50 years. The Italian brand has continually produced dynamic and stylish motorbikes and the jewel in their crown is the legendary Ducati 1199 Panigale. First introduced at the 2011 Milan Motorcycle Show, the high-powered Panigale was the most anticipated motorbike of 2012 and we’re about to find out why.

  • Stunning thoroughbred superbike
  • 186 mph top speed
  • 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds!
  • Starting at £19,750

Design

The 1199’s design is distinctively Ducati with its magnetic personality exuding the beauty and speed. The Panigale’s pioneering lightweight chassis allows for the rider to perfect his or her posture for the ultimate riding position. Uniquely, the 1199 Panigale’s modern design means that the engine is the structural element of the frame which offers a fantastic weight distribution. The bike’s monocoque structure in cast aluminium makes this possible as it provides increased strength and reduces the bike’s total weight by 5 kg. This structure is fixed onto the cylinder head with two aluminium bushings at the front. Exclusively, all 1199 Panigales are fitted with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres – the same tyres used in the Superstock 1000 World Championship!

Features

The Panigale comes with some serious kit, its adaptive instrument panel changes its display to suit environmental conditions, switching between ‘Road’ and ‘Wet’ riding modes.Panigale 1199’s also feature electronically adjustable suspension – the first production sports motorbike model  in the world to do so. Rebound and compression damping are modified electronically, but you still have to alter the pre-load manually. The trademark electronic Ducati Quick Shift system comes as standard – this innovative system allows riders to accelerate through the gears without touching the clutch.

Performance

With a top speed of 186 mph and a 0-60 time of just 2.8 seconds, the Panigale is blindingly quick. Thanks to its electronic fuel injection system, the 1199’s superquadro 90° L-twin 1198cc engine generates a staggering 195 bhp – that’s twice as much as the average hatchback! The performance enhancements don’t stop there, the engine’s desmodromic valves are driven via a rugged chain-drive rather than the traditional belt. It’s innovative decompression device allows for a smaller starter motor and battery – saving on weight and space.

The Panigale 1199 is a serious bike for serious riders, however its little sister the 899 may be a wiser choice for those who want something with a little less bite. The 899 achieves a lower (but still impressive) top speed of 165 mph thanks to its downsized 148 bhp motor.

If you want to get your hands on a supreme Panigale – the 1199 is available from £19,750 with the 899 sibling coming in at £12,495.
