Mercedes Drives From Africa to England On a Single Tank Of Fuel!

July 7, 2014

When you see a Mercedes, the instant reaction usually provokes descriptions like ‘luxurious’, ‘expensive’ and ‘powerful’, but surely not economical? We didn’t think so either. That is, until the German automaker decided to show their engineering prowess with an extreme test of fuel efficiency last month. The PR stunt challenged perceptions of the luxury brand and astounded journalists who thought it couldn’t be done – Africa to England on just one tank of fuel!

Mercedes E300 BlueTEC Hybrid

Mercedes’ weapon of choice for the challenge was the all new E300 BlueTEC hybrid saloon. The E-class looks like any other luxury saloon from the outside – however, the clever diesel-electric hybrid motor under the bonnet makes it one of Mercedes’ most economical cars ever. Firmly aimed at the company car market, the executive saloon offers huge savings on running costs without compromising on comfort or style.

The 2.1 litre diesel engine works in combination with an electric motor in a traditional hybrid setup to produce a punchy 201 bhp. That’s more than enough power for the Mercedes to keep pace with its non hybrid counterparts. In fact, the E300 BlueTEC will accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 7.5 seconds, hitting a top speed of 150 mph! These are incredible performance figures for such a large car that will achieve 68.9 mpg!

Africa to England on a Single Tank!

In order to put the BlueTEC hybrid system to the test, Mercedes decided that a cross continent drive was fitting. Starting the challenge in Tangier (Morocco), journalist Andrew Frankel and a relief driver topped the E300’s fuel tank up to max and set off on their epic journey.

Driving up to Morocco’s northern coast, the Mercedes caught a quick ferry across the strait of Gibraltar, before continuing on through Spain and France – pointed right at the English channel. Mercedes were keen to stress that the E-class was not modified in any way, and the one used in the test is available to buy in showrooms worldwide.

27 hours and 1200 miles later, after passing through 4 countries spread over 2 continents, the E-300 arrived at its final destination – Goodwood Festival of Speed. What’s more, the E-300 reached the finish line with 100 miles worth of extra fuel to spare! Taking its theoretical range to approximately 1300 miles – all on a single tank of fuel. In fact, the E300 BlueTEC was even more efficient than its official specifications suggested, achieving an incredible 73.6 mpg!
