Word on the street is that Audi are set to debut an SUV concept, based on the incredibly popular Audi TT sports coupe, at the Beijing Motor Show later this month. Audi have been on a research and development roll, with a new Audi TT and a replacement for the ageing Audi R8 supercar coming later this year. The SUV will be Audi’s answer to the growing popularity of the “crossover” car market. Competition is high, with BMW’s new X4 crossover and the Porsche Macan gaining traction.
Spokesperson for Audi, Ulrich Hackenberg, has said that Audi wants to capitalise on the massive success of the Audi TT – expanding its unique design features across the Audi range. The Audi TT inspired SUV concept is expected to be named the Q4 crossover, joining Audi’s already popular Q range of 4x4s. The current Q range consists of the baby Q3, midsize Q5 and the daddy of the family, the Q7 – slotting the Q4 nicely in the middle of the range.
Official sketches hint at the design of the production model – taking inspiration from the Audi TT and R8’s sweeping dramatic lines, curved panels and flared wheel arches. The sketches also reveal that the 5-door Q4 SUV has only 4 seats and shares its dashboard design with the next generation Audi TT. Images of the new Audi dashboard reveal a simplified design, with a high definition screen taking the place of dials and instruments.
Audi showcased a similar design concept at the Detroit Motor Show called the Allroad Shooting Brake. It’s expected that the Q4 concept will feature the same engine and drivetrain as the Shooting Brake concept. The hybrid system utilises a 2.0 litre TFSI engine and an electric motor, linked through Audi’s S-Tronic gearbox – to produce a combined horsepower of 408 bhp! Audi claims that the hybrid Allroad Shooting Brake is capable of achieving 0-62 in 4.6 seconds. No further information is available on the Q4 concept as of yet – however, the world’s media are anticipating Audi to provide full specifications at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show on the 20th April 2014.
