Best Budget Supermini: Hyundai i20

May 15, 2014

The South-Korean automaker debuted the i20 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008, since then, the little Hyundai has gone from strength to strength. In an economy where price is king, Hyundai has experienced a massive growth in sales, with their superminis becoming popular on the UK’s roads seemingly overnight. Sitting in the middle of Hyundai’s hatchback range, between the tiny i10 and roomy i30, the i20 falls right into the supermini market’s sweet spot – competing with the likes of the ever popular Ford Fiesta in terms of size.

Hyundai might not have the greatest ‘street-cred’ when it comes to badges, but the brand is quickly catching up with what’s important to customers. Value for money, safety, reliability, fuel economy and technology – and the i20 is firing on all cylinders.

The i20 is a serious contender when it comes to fuel economy. The most economical engine in the range is the 1.1L CRDi diesel which is capable of a staggering 88 mpg, it also falls well below the 100g/km of CO2 bracket, meaning i20 owners are road tax exempt. Other engines in the range include a more capable 89bhp 1.4L diesel for drivers who are looking for a bit of extra oomph. There are also two petrol engines, a 1.2L and 1.4L both delivering better than average fuel efficiency figures and average performance.

Safety standards in the Hyundai are hard to top – making the i20 an ideal family car for safety conscious parents. The i20 was awarded the highest safety accreditation around, being certified with a 5 star rating in the Euro NCAP safety test. The supermini also comes with ESP (electronic stability control) as standard, meaning the i20 will stay firmly planted to the road when cornering.

Equipment levels are where Hyundai really blow the competition out of the water. Features which are normally found on eye-wateringly expensive extras lists for most manufacturers come as standard on the i20. The entry level ‘Classic’ model comes with air conditioning, Mp3 connectivity, 6 airbags and electric windows as standard. If your budget can stretch a little further, Hyundai get even more generous with leather trim, steering wheel controls, electric heated mirrors and alloy wheels found on top-end models.

The Hyundai might not be as exciting to drive as the Ford Fiesta, nor as pretty as the Suzuki Swift, but it certainly wins out on value for money alone. The entry level Hyundai i20 Classic 3-door is priced at just £10,095 – a bargain considering its generous equipment levels and deal-sealing 5 year warranty.
