Fiat 500L Trekking Beats Edition 2014

February 19, 2014

First there was the Fiat 500L, a five-door mini MPV based on the classic Fiat 500. Then there was the taller, longer, higher-riding 500L Trekking. And now we have the 500L Trekking Beats Edition to add to the party. But what exactly is it?

The Beats Edition is essentially a pimped-out version of the standard 500L Trekking. It has the same dimensions as the Trekking, but a number of style and equipment upgrades make this the truly premium 500L experience.

Firstly, the Beats Edition offers various different two-tone black/grey colour schemes, highlighted with the clever use of touches of red, like those evident on the brake calipers that nestle inside the 17 inch alloy wheels. Both matt and gloss finishes are available, adding to the sense of a truly customisable paintjob. This colour scheme is echoed in the interior, with a matt grey dash offset by black leather and fabric seats and red 500 logos. It all adds up to a funkier, more style-conscious 500 than we’re used to.

The Beats Edition also sees two new engines added to the 500L range (they’ll also be available with the standard 500L and the 500L Trekking). They are a 1.4 litre T-Jet turbo petrol and a 1.6 litre MultiJet diesel, both developing 118bhp. The existing 500L engines, the 0.9 litre TwinAir petrol and a less powerful version of the 1.6 MultiJet are both also on offer. These two budget options produce a slightly less impressive 104bhp.

Like the 500L Trekking, the Beats Edition benefits from riding higher than the standard 500L, giving a comfortable ride, although with a fair degree of body-roll if you do choose to really attack those corners. None of the engines on offer are particularly powerful and when you put your foot down you may end up feeling like there’s quite a wait for the engine to catch up, but the diesel version does pack a little extra punch if that’s what you’re looking for.

Of course, for a model known as the Beats Edition, you’d probably be expecting something pretty spectacular from the sound system, right? What you get is a 520W, seven-speaker stereo system powered by an eight-channel, DSP-equipped amplifier that has, as its major selling-point, the fact that it has been tuned up by rapper and music producer Dr Dre through his BeatsAudio brand. But is it actually any good?

It’s certainly immersive: the well-positioned speakers and, in particular, the two powerful subwoofers providing solid, surround sound while the use of some clever equalisation algorithms is intended to give the same quality and range of sound heard by a recording artist in the studio. Naysayers may complain that the sound is a little flat, but the system certainly has the power to drown out all of those annoying niggles that might otherwise impinge on your drive time.

Overall, this isn’t a huge leap forward from the 500L Trekking, especially since the two new engines will be available in both, so some might question whether the Beats Edition is really worth the extra money. The answer to that really comes down to two things: style and sound.

If you want the best looking, best sound version of the 500L possible, then the 500L Trekking Beats Edition is exactly that. However, if you want to save a little money and get a car that will drive the same, with the same ride and come with all the same features (barring the sound system) then you might as well stick to the cheaper 500L Trekking.

Ultimately, the choice is yours.
