If there’s anything sci-fi cinema has taught us, it’s to expect a whole lot from the future of technology. But with technological advancements continuing to move at such an astounding pace, it’s becoming harder and harder to feel like we’re asking too much of the tech world’s innovators. Any car owner is bound to be blown away by the increasing capabilities of today’s new models – but we can’t help but wonder if there are still some tricks major automakers are missing.
Sure, there are some sweet rides on the car market right now – but we’re willing to bet you’d pay a hefty price for these particular extras. It’s time to get creative.
Night Vision
Imagine driving at night without needing hawk vision, feeling like you’re front and centre in the Batmobile itself. This awesome extra would show images on a screen in the centre of the dashboard, and use thermal imaging and infrared radiation to detect cars, pedestrians and animals in your way. The system works by picking up on heat emanating from objects and processes their thermal signature as images. We reckon this technology would allow drivers of the future to prevent casualties, as you’d have the tools required spot trouble before it ever gets close. Pretty cool, right?
Voice Recognition
Visualise never having to use car keys again, or suffering low-level emotional breakdowns when you lose them. Better yet, imagine posting Facebook statuses or replying to a tweet without having to type anything? And the only person your car will obey is you. We can’t really stress what a monumental difference advanced voice recognition technology would make to our driving lives – making every aspect of the on-the-road experience ultimately convenient. If we can get Apple on the case, this could be the next phase for the in-car revolution that is CarPlay.
Mechanical Hand
This one could put an end to many of life’s biggest driving dilemmas – with making phone calls, eating on the go and many more day-to-day activities both socially acceptable and legal in transit. Having a mechanical hand feed you and do your bidding is an offer no driver could possibly refuse – and is one sci-fi innovation we can’t wait to take shape. There’s also the added bonus of being fed by a sentient robot, while on a long slog when you just can’t take your eyes off the road or take your hands off the wheel to indulge. Yum.
Drowsy Driver Warnings
Every driver will at some point have faced the dilemma of wanting to drive vs. not wanting to cause a horrific pile-up due to obscene tiredness. According to statistics, 20% of all road accidents are caused by fatigue – but we’ve thought of a nifty little solution to this phenomenon. This system would alert you and set off an audible alarm if it detects that you’re too drowsy to keep driving, be it through facial recognition software or cameras. Only a handful of cars currently possess technology resembling this concept and we think we can all agree that this will be an absolute godsend when it reaches the mass production stage.
Blind Spot Detection
Blind spots are the bane of every driver’s life – but imagine software that detects motion and alerts you to an object coming up beside you, whether it’s a car or motorcycle that you can’t easily see. An added bonus is that this software will also detect objects that are easily visible to us, that we’ve neglected to notice from obliviousness or general idiocy. Versions of this technology are available on some car models – and we can’t wait until it comes as standard on all models.
